Laid off from Comcast? Your severance, stock and 401(k), in order

Comcast’s late-October WARN notices cover 994 positions in Pennsylvania, Washington, New Jersey and California, most ending December 31, 2026. Unvested stock generally ends with the job, vested options have a short clock, and the severance will likely be taxed in 2027. Here’s the order to take it in.

Step 1

Estimate your packet

Four numbers give you the severance, the tax it will likely leave unpaid, and your deadlines.

Your job
Comcast doesn’t publish the formula. Use the number in your separation letter.
Base pay only. Bonus doesn’t count toward severance.
Tax and stock details (sharpens the estimate)

Filing status
Anything paid after your last day is taxed in the year you receive it. With most last days on December 31, 2026, that’s 2027.

26 weeks × $2,885 a week

Withheld for federal tax
$16,500
Flat 22% supplemental rate
Likely federal tax shortfall
$1,314
Top bracket: 24%, plus state tax
  • At 45, a group-layoff release generally must give you 45 days to decide and 7 to revoke.
  • Vested stock options generally must be exercised within 90 days of your last day.
  • Set aside about $1,300, or make an estimated payment before January 15.

Add your last day to see your personal deadlines.

Comcast doesn’t publish its severance formula, so the estimate uses the weeks in your letter. The tax estimate uses 2026 federal brackets and the standard deduction, and assumes nine months of salary this year. An educational estimate, not tax advice; confirm with your financial professional. Nothing you enter is saved or sent.

Step 2

A worked example

Hypothetical. A senior manager, 47, single, with 12 years at Comcast and a $190,000 base. Last day: December 31, 2026. Suppose the letter offers 26 weeks.

The packet, in dollars
Severance: 26 weeks of base pay$95,000
Federal tax withheld at 22%−$20,900
Federal tax actually owed on it, at a 32% top bracketPaid in 2027, on top of $135,000 from a new job that starts in April−$23,770
Shortfall to set aside before April$2,870
Unvested RSUs and options forfeitedDoesn’t meet the retirement test$60,000
Also in the picture
  • Vested stock options, in the money, that expire 90 days after the last day
  • Comcast shares bought through the employee stock purchase plan
  • $380,000 in the 401(k)
  1. 1
    This week

Ask HR the checklist questions, including how applying for one of the new roles affects the severance offer. Send the release to an employment attorney; at 47 there are 45 days to decide and 7 to revoke.

  2. 2
    Before signing

List every vested option and its exercise price. The window to exercise closes around March 31, 2027.

  3. 3
    Before December 31

Compare COBRA with a Marketplace plan for early 2027, when income is low until the new job starts.

  4. 4
    Early 2027

The severance arrives. With the new job’s pay, the top federal bracket is 32%, so set aside about $2,900 beyond the 22% withheld, plus Pennsylvania and Philadelphia tax.

  5. 5
    2027

Decide how much Comcast stock to keep from the ESPP and any exercised options; it’s now tied to a former employer.

  6. 6
    No rush

Confirm the 401(k) match is fully vested, then keep the plan, roll it to an IRA or the new employer’s plan, or both.

Step 3

Deadlines that start on your last day

Handle what can’t be undone first. The retirement accounts can wait, as long as you don’t cash them out.

  1. Before your last dayDecide whether to apply for a new role

Comcast’s notices say it will consider affected employees for its new and open positions. Ask how applying, accepting or declining an offer affects your severance.

  2. Before you signRead the separation agreement and its release

If you’re 40 or older and part of a group layoff, federal law generally gives you at least 45 days to consider a release and 7 days to revoke it, plus a list of the ages and job titles of who was and wasn’t selected.

  3. Within about 90 daysExercise vested stock options

Comcast’s equity program generally gives 90 days after employment ends to exercise vested options, or until they expire if that’s sooner. Unexercised options are lost.

  4. Within 60 daysChoose COBRA or a Marketplace plan

You generally have 60 days to elect COBRA, and coverage reaches back to the day it ended. Losing job-based coverage also opens a 60-day window for a Marketplace plan.

  5. When the money landsPlan the tax for that year

Severance is taxed as wages, often withheld at a flat 22%. Paid after a December 31 last day, it’s 2027 income, stacked on whatever you earn next.

Step 4

Comcast’s plans, decoded

Severance

  • No published formula; your letter states the weeks
  • Comcast says it will consider affected employees for 1,100+ new roles
  • Earlier Comcast notices offered severance to those not placed in another role
  • New Jersey law: at least 1 week of pay per year of service in a covered mass layoff

Your decision: Whether to pursue a new role or take the package, and whether to sign the release.

Source

RSUs and stock options

  • RSUs granted since 2022 vest 20% a year over five years
  • Unvested RSUs and options are forfeited when employment ends, except for death, disability or retirement
  • Retirement: age 62 with 10 or more years of service
  • Vested options: generally 90 days to exercise

Your decision: Whether to exercise vested options, and how much Comcast stock to keep. If you’re close to 62 with 10 years, ask whether retirement terms apply.

Source

401(k) (Retirement-Investment Plan)

  • Dollar-for-dollar match on the first 6% of eligible pay
  • Automatic enrollment for new employees
  • Some sources describe a two-year cliff on the match; confirm yours is vested

Your decision: Keep it in the plan, roll it to an IRA or a new employer’s plan, or both. If you’re 55 or older in the year you leave, money left in the plan avoids the 10% early-withdrawal penalty.

Source

Stock purchase plan and deferred pay

  • Most employees can buy Comcast stock at a discount through the employee stock purchase plan
  • Certain managers defer pay into Comcast’s deferred compensation plans
  • Deferred accounts are credited mostly at a fixed annual rate

Your decision: Ask what happens to money in the current stock-purchase period. Learn when any deferred pay is paid out; it can’t be rolled into an IRA.

Step 5

The four decisions

1

Stay or go

Comcast is posting more than 1,100 new roles while it cuts.

  • Ask HR which open roles you’d be considered for, and by when.
  • Ask how applying, accepting or declining affects the severance offer.
  • Compare the new role’s pay and stock with the package plus a job search.

Get the answer on severance in writing before you turn down an internal offer.

2

The release

Severance is usually paid in exchange for giving up legal claims.

  • Read every page, including confidentiality and non-solicitation terms.
  • Ask what happens to your bonus, unused time off and stock if you sign versus if you don’t.
  • Have an employment attorney review it when the money or the stock is significant.

The review period is yours to use. Signing early doesn’t pay you more.

3

Your stock

Unvested awards generally end. Vested options have a 90-day clock.

  • List every grant: vested, unvested and the exercise price of each option.
  • Decide whether to exercise vested options before the window closes.
  • Decide how much Comcast stock to keep from options and the ESPP.

Options that expire unexercised are gone, even if they’re worth something.

4

The 2027 tax year

Severance and new pay can land in the same year.

  • Estimate 2027 income: severance, any deferred pay and a new salary.
  • Raise withholding at a new job, or make estimated payments.
  • If 2027 is a low year instead, consider a Roth conversion then.

Step 6

Questions to ask HR before you sign

Print it, bring it, and get the answers in writing.

Questions people ask

How many Comcast employees are being laid off?

Comcast’s late-October 2026 WARN notices cover 994 positions: 634 at its Philadelphia headquarters towers, 159 statewide in Washington, 119 across nine New Jersey counties and 82 in California, with most separations beginning December 31, 2026.

How much severance does Comcast pay?

Comcast doesn’t publish a severance formula. Your separation letter states the amount. In New Jersey, state law requires at least one week of pay per year of service in a covered mass layoff.

What happens to my unvested Comcast RSUs if I’m laid off?

Comcast’s equity program says unvested RSUs and options are forfeited when employment ends, except for death, disability or retirement at age 62 with 10 or more years of service. Your award agreement and separation agreement control.

How long do I have to exercise Comcast stock options after I leave?

Generally 90 days after employment ends, or until the options expire if that’s sooner. Retirement-eligible employees have longer.

Can I apply for another job at Comcast?

Comcast says it will post more than 1,100 new positions and consider affected employees for them. Ask HR how applying or accepting affects your severance.

Is my Comcast 401(k) match vested?

Comcast matches dollar for dollar on the first 6% of eligible pay. Some sources describe a two-year cliff before the match vests, so confirm your vested balance with the plan.

When is Comcast severance taxed?

In the year you receive it. For a December 31, 2026 last day, that’s 2027, on top of any new job’s pay. It’s often withheld at a flat 22%, which may be less than you owe.
