Questions people ask
What does the score measure?
Four things a retirement income plan depends on: how much of your savings you need to withdraw each year (40 points), a cash buffer for bad markets (20), how your savings are spread across pre-tax, Roth and taxable accounts (20), and whether you have a written plan for which accounts pay for each year (20).
What is a safe withdrawal rate?
A common rule of thumb from historical studies is about 4% of savings in the first year, adjusted for inflation after that. It isn’t a guarantee or a recommendation; your spending flexibility, other income, taxes and investments all change the answer.
What is the bucket strategy?
Splitting savings by when you’ll need the money: a few years of withdrawals in cash, the next several years in steadier investments, and the rest invested for growth. It helps you avoid selling investments after a market drop to pay the bills.
