How the Kentucky inheritance tax works

  • Class A beneficiaries are exempt: a spouse, parents, children, stepchildren, grandchildren, and brothers and sisters, including half-siblings.
  • Class B beneficiaries, such as nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, sons- and daughters-in-law and great-grandchildren, receive a $1,000 exemption and pay 4% to 16%.
  • Class C covers everyone else, including cousins and friends, with a $500 exemption and rates of 6% to 16%.
  • Paying within nine months of death earns a 5% discount.

Planning points

  • The tax depends on who inherits, so leaving assets to a sibling instead of a niece, or to charity, changes the bill.
  • Life insurance paid to a named beneficiary is generally not subject to Kentucky inheritance tax, which makes it a common tool for gifts to Class B and C heirs.
