Laid off from Johnson & Johnson? Your severance, pension, stock and 401(k), in order
Johnson & Johnson filed two New Jersey WARN notices in 2026 covering 174 positions at its New Brunswick headquarters. J&J publishes its severance formula and how stock and benefits are treated, and the details turn on two things: whether you sign the release, and whether you’re 55 with 10 years of service. Here’s the order to take it in.

Step 1
Estimate your packet
Four numbers give you the severance, the tax it will likely leave unpaid, and your deadlines.
Estimated severance$75,000
26 weeks × $2,885 a week (the 26-week minimum)
Withheld for federal tax
$16,500
Flat 22% supplemental rate
Likely federal tax shortfall
$1,314
Top bracket: 24%, plus state tax
New Jersey legal minimum
8 weeks
1 week per year of service in a covered mass layoff
At 45, a group-layoff release generally must give you 45 days to decide and 7 to revoke.
Vested stock options generally must be exercised within 90 days of your last day.
Set aside about $1,300, or make an estimated payment before January 15.
Add your last day to see your personal deadlines.
J&J’s severance plan, as amended and filed with the SEC, pays 2 weeks of base pay per full year of service with a signed release, with a minimum by job grade and a 104-week maximum. The tax estimate uses 2026 federal brackets and the standard deduction, and assumes nine months of salary this year. An educational estimate, not tax advice; confirm with your financial professional. Step 2
A worked example
Hypothetical. A manager, 54, married, at exempt grade 40–50 with 14 years of service and a $185,000 base. Last day: December 18, 2026.

−$21,915
Federal tax actually owed on it, at a 22% top bracketPaid mostly in 2027, when the spouse’s $110,000 is the household’s other income
−$19,615
Withholding covers it, with some to spare
+$2,300

PSUs and RSUs granted before February 2024 are prorated; $460,000 in the 401(k)
1
This week
Ask HR the checklist questions and send the release to an employment attorney. Signing turns 4 weeks of pay into 28; at 54 there are 45 days to decide and 7 to revoke.
2
Before turning down any J&J role
Under the plan, refusing a comparable J&J position within 50 miles, or accepting any J&J job, ends severance eligibility. Get any offer reviewed first.
3
At 54, not 55
Separating before 55 means no retiree medical and no Qualifying Separation treatment for stock. Ask HR to confirm how your age and service are counted on your last day.
4
Through mid-2027
Medical continues at the active-employee rate while severance is paid, up to a year. After that, it’s full-cost COBRA or a Marketplace plan.
5
2027
Most of the $99,615 is paid in 2027. With the spouse’s income, the top bracket is 22%, so withholding should roughly cover federal tax.
6
At 55 and later
The final-average-pay pension can start as early as 55 or wait to 65. Compare the monthly amounts at each age before choosing.
Step 3
Deadlines that start on your last day
Handle what can’t be undone first. The retirement accounts can wait, as long as you don’t cash them out.
Before you signRead the separation agreement and its release
If you’re 40 or older and part of a group layoff, federal law generally gives you at least 45 days to consider a release and 7 days to revoke it, plus a list of the ages and job titles of who was and wasn’t selected.
Before you decline a roleKnow the comparable-position rule
J&J’s plan ends severance eligibility if you refuse a comparable J&J position within 50 miles, or accept another J&J job.
Within 60 daysRepay any 401(k) loan
J&J’s benefit sheet says the full loan is due within 60 days or it’s treated as a distribution. A loan offset can generally still be rolled into an IRA by your tax-filing deadline.
Within about 3 monthsExercise vested stock options
Under J&J’s award terms, vested options generally must be exercised within 3 months of a reduction-in-force separation, unless you qualify for longer windows at 55 or older.
When severance endsReplace health coverage
Subsidized coverage continues until severance pay ends or one year, whichever is first. After that, COBRA is full cost, so compare it with a Marketplace plan.
Step 4
J&J’s plans, decoded
Severance
With a signed release: 2 weeks of base pay per full year of service, up to 104 weeks
Minimums: 6 weeks (non-exempt) to 52 weeks (grade 51 and up)
Without a release: 4 weeks of base pay
Refusing a comparable J&J role within 50 miles ends eligibility
Your decision: Whether to sign, and whether to pursue another role inside J&J. Benefits continue at active rates while severance is paid, up to a year.
Match: 75 cents per dollar on the first 6% of pay, up to 4.5%
Unvested match is forfeited after you leave
Loans are due within 60 days of separation
Excess Savings Plan balances are paid as a lump sum after you leave
Your decision: Keep it in the plan, roll it to an IRA or a new employer’s plan, or both. If you’re 55 or older in the year you leave, money left in the plan avoids the 10% penalty.
New Jersey publishes the month a notice was posted, not the exact date. Some news reports gave different counts; these are the state’s figures. A notice states what was planned; final numbers can differ. Checked November 4, 2026.
Questions people ask
How many Johnson & Johnson employees are being laid off in New Jersey?
J&J filed two New Jersey WARN notices in 2026 covering 174 positions in New Brunswick: 86 effective August 21, 2026 and 88 effective December 18, 2026.
How much severance does Johnson & Johnson pay?
Under J&J’s severance plan as filed with the SEC, employees who sign a release get 2 weeks of base pay per full year of service, with a minimum from 6 to 52 weeks depending on grade and a maximum of 104 weeks. Without a release, it’s 4 weeks.
What happens to my J&J RSUs and options in a layoff?
J&J’s benefit sheet says that in a reduction in force, RSUs and options granted since February 13, 2024 are forfeited and PSUs are prorated. Older RSUs and PSUs are prorated and older options vest. If you’re 62, or 55 with 10 years of service, awards generally keep vesting on schedule.
Can I get retiree medical if I’m laid off from J&J?
J&J’s benefit sheet ties retiree medical to being at least 55 with 10 years of pension credited service at separation, with enrollment deadlines that can permanently waive it if missed.
Does Johnson & Johnson still have a pension?
Yes. Employees hired before 2015 earned a final-average-pay benefit, and from 2026 all eligible non-union employees earn new benefits under the Retirement Value Plan formula. When and how you can take each part depends on your age and when you were hired.
Do I lose severance if I turn down another J&J job?
J&J’s plan ends severance eligibility for anyone who refuses a comparable J&J position within 50 miles of their current work location, or accepts another J&J job.
How is J&J severance paid and taxed?
J&J’s benefit sheet describes severance paid through payroll, with benefits continuing until it ends. It’s taxed as wages in the year it’s paid, so a late-year last day pushes most of it into the next tax year.
