RMD Calculator 2026

How much must I withdraw from my IRA or 401(k) this year?

Enter your birth year and last year-end balance to see this year’s required minimum distribution, when RMDs begin, and how they could grow over the next 20 years.

Your inputs

Add together traditional IRAs, which can share one RMD. Calculate each 401(k) separately.

RMDs are taxed as ordinary income and count toward the income Medicare uses for IRMAA two years later. Large future RMDs are a common reason to consider Roth conversions before they begin, or qualified charitable distributions once they do.

How the calculator works

Each year’s RMD is the prior December 31 balance divided by the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table factor for the age you reach that year. The projection then subtracts the RMD and grows the remainder at your assumed rate. Starting ages follow SECURE 2.0.

It does not cover inherited IRAs (see the Inherited IRA RMD Calculator), a sole spouse beneficiary more than 10 years younger, who uses a different IRS table, or the first-year April 1 deadline. Use the RMD income calendar to organize accounts and dates.

Frequently asked questions

When do required minimum distributions start?

At age 73 for people born from 1951 through 1959 and at age 75 for people born in 1960 or later. The first RMD can be delayed until April 1 of the following year, but then two RMDs are due that year.

How is an RMD calculated?

Divide the account balance on December 31 of the prior year by the distribution period for your age in the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table. At 75 the factor is 24.6, so a $1 million balance requires about $40,650.

Do Roth IRAs have RMDs?

Not for the original owner. Since 2024, Roth accounts in employer plans also have no RMDs for the owner. Inherited Roth accounts do have distribution rules.

What is the penalty for missing an RMD?

An excise tax of 25% of the amount not taken, reduced to 10% if corrected in time under SECURE 2.0.

Can I give my RMD to charity?

From age 70½, qualified charitable distributions paid directly from an IRA to charity can count toward the RMD and are excluded from taxable income, up to an annual limit.

Large RMDs on the horizon?

Conversions, charitable distributions and withdrawal order can change how much tax RMDs create. Tell us what you are weighing.
