Laid off from JPMorgan Chase? Your severance, RSUs, pension and 401(k), in order

JPMorgan Chase has filed six New Jersey WARN notices in 2026 covering 632 positions in Jersey City, the latest posted in November with separations running into January 2027. If your job is eliminated, your RSUs can keep vesting, the severance comes as a lump sum soon after your last day, and the release unlocks both. Here’s the order to take it in.

Your plan, in about a minute

Tell us what brought you here and answer only the questions that matter for it. You’ll get the first three things to do, with your own numbers.

  1. What brought you here
  2. A few details
  3. Your plan

What brought you here today?

Pick everything that applies. You’ll only be asked what those need.

Step 1

Estimate your packet

Four numbers give you the severance, the tax it will likely leave unpaid, and your deadlines.

Your job
JPMorgan Chase doesn’t publish the formula. Use the number in your separation letter.
Base pay only. Bonus doesn’t count toward severance.
Tax and stock details (sharpens the estimate)
Tax and stock details
Filing status
Estimated severance$75,000

26 weeks × $2,885 a week

Withheld for federal tax
$16,500
Flat 22% supplemental rate
Likely federal tax shortfall
$1,314
Top bracket: 24%, plus state tax
New Jersey legal minimum
8 weeks
1 week per year of service in a covered mass layoff
  • At 45, a group-layoff release generally must give you 45 days to decide and 7 to revoke.
  • Set aside about $1,300, or make an estimated payment before January 15.

Add your last day to see your personal deadlines.

JPMorgan Chase sets severance under its U.S. Severance Pay Plan. This guide couldn’t confirm the formula from an official copy, so the estimate uses the weeks in your letter. In New Jersey, state law sets a floor of one week of pay per year of service in a covered mass layoff. The tax estimate uses 2026 federal brackets and the standard deduction, and assumes nine months of salary this year. An educational estimate, not tax advice; confirm with your financial professional. Nothing you enter is sent, and it’s saved on this device only if you choose to remember your answers.

Step 2

A worked example

Hypothetical. A vice president, 45, married, with 9 full years at JPMorgan Chase and a $180,000 base. Last day: November 20, 2026. Suppose the letter offers 18 weeks.

The packet, in dollars
Severance: 18 weeks of base pay$62,308
Federal tax withheld at 22%−$13,708
Federal tax actually owed on it, at a 24% top bracket$160,000 of salary through November 20, a $40,000 RSU vest in January and the spouse’s $110,000 are already in 2026−$14,954
Shortfall to set aside before April$1,246
Deferred stock still vesting after the last day$40,000 a year for 3 years
Also in the picture
  • 18 weeks of base pay is $62,308, a lump sum paid in December 2026 if the signed release is back in time
  • $120,000 of unvested RSUs that keep vesting under the job elimination terms, about $40,000 a year
  • $18,000 in the cash balance pension and $310,000 in the 401(k)
  1. 1
    This week

Ask HR the checklist questions and send the release to an employment attorney. At 45 in a group layoff, there are 45 days to decide and 7 to revoke, and the lump sum waits for the signed release.

  2. 2
    Through the last day

Keep doing the work you’re asked to do. The award terms condition continued RSU vesting on cooperative, professional service after notice.

  3. 3
    Before the check

Paid in 2026, the lump sum stacks on a full year’s income, so the top federal bracket is 24%. Set aside about $1,250 beyond the 22% withheld, plus New Jersey tax. A release signed in January would push the check into 2027.

  4. 4
    By late January 2027

Medical ends November 30. Elect COBRA within 60 days; with the signed release, it costs the active-employee rate for about four months, matching the 18 weeks of severance.

  5. 5
    For the next three years

Each RSU vest is taxable income. Keep to the non-solicitation terms: breaking them can cancel the shares still to come.

  6. 6
    No rush

The 2026 match and pay credit are credited after year-end. Then decide whether to keep the 401(k) and pension in the plans, roll them to an IRA, or both.

Step 3

Deadlines that start on your last day

Handle what can’t be undone first. The retirement accounts can wait, as long as you don’t cash them out.

  1. Before you signRead the separation agreement and its release

If you’re 40 or older and part of a group layoff, federal law generally gives you at least 45 days to consider a release and 7 days to revoke it, plus a list of the ages and job titles of who was and wasn’t selected.

  2. Until your last dayKeep the job elimination terms

JPMorgan’s 2026 RSU terms let awards keep vesting after a job elimination only if you provided the services requested after notice “in a cooperative and professional manner” and signed the required release.

  3. Within 31 daysConvert or port life insurance

JPMorgan’s 2026 As You Leave Guide gives 31 days from your termination date to convert Basic Life Insurance, or convert or port supplemental life and AD&D coverage.

  4. Within 60 daysElect COBRA

Medical coverage ends on the last day of the month you leave. With a signed release, COBRA medical and dental cost the active-employee rate for the lesser of six months or the months of severance you receive; after that, it’s 102% of the full premium.

  5. By March 31 of next yearSubmit spending account claims

Health care and dependent care spending account claims are due by March 31 of the year after you leave. Unclaimed balances are forfeited.

Step 4

JPMorgan Chase’s plans, decoded

Severance

  • Paid under the U.S. Severance Pay Plan when a job is eliminated
  • A lump sum, generally within two pay periods after your final pay
  • Paid only once you sign and return the Release Agreement
  • New Jersey law: at least 1 week of pay per year of service in a covered mass layoff

Your decision: Whether to sign, and when. The plan’s formula wasn’t confirmed from an official copy for this guide, so your letter states your weeks. Severance doesn’t count as pay for 401(k) contributions.

RSUs and other long-term awards

  • Job elimination: unvested RSUs keep vesting as if you were still employed
  • Only if you cooperated after notice and signed the required release
  • Non-solicitation runs the longer of 1 year after you leave or 3 years from grant
  • Up to 50% can be cancelled under protection-based vesting; detrimental conduct and clawback terms apply

Your decision: Confirm in writing which grants continue, plan for the tax on each vest, and decide how much JPMorgan stock to keep. Older grants have their own terms.

Source

Retirement Plan (cash balance pension)

  • Pay credits stopped after December 31, 2019; the plan is closed to new entrants
  • Interest credits continue: one-year Treasury plus 1%, at least 4.5% (5.2% for 2025)
  • Fully vested after 3 years of service
  • Lump sum or annuity after you leave; a spouse must consent to anything less than a 50% joint and survivor annuity

Your decision: Leave it earning interest credits, take a lump sum and roll it to an IRA, or take an annuity. Balances under $7,000 can be paid out or rolled automatically.

Source

401(k) Savings Plan

  • Match: dollar for dollar up to 5% of eligible pay; capped at $10,000 at $350,000 to $999,999 of total cash pay
  • Automatic pay credit: 3% of pay up to $100,000 (up to 5% for some longer-tenured employees), for total cash pay under $350,000
  • Both are credited after year-end; a job elimination counts as an eligible termination
  • Company money vests after 3 years of service, or earlier on an eligible termination

Your decision: Confirm this year’s match and pay credit will post, then keep the plan, roll it to an IRA, or both. With $1,000 or more vested, a loan can stay on its schedule by automatic bank payments.

Step 5

The four decisions

1

The release

It unlocks the lump sum, the COBRA subsidy and continued RSU vesting.

  • Read every page, including confidentiality and non-solicitation terms.
  • Ask HR to confirm in writing which RSU and PSU grants keep vesting.
  • Have an employment attorney review it when the money or the stock is significant.

The review period is yours to use, but the lump sum isn’t paid until the signed release is returned.

2

Your RSUs

For many people, the stock still to vest is worth more than the severance.

  • List every grant with its vesting dates and amounts.
  • Set aside tax for each vest: withholding is a flat rate that may be below your bracket.
  • Know the non-solicitation and conduct terms that apply until the last share vests.

Breaking the post-employment terms can cancel unvested shares and claw back recent ones.

3

Pension and 401(k)

Two separate decisions, neither due on your last day.

  • Get the cash balance pension’s lump sum and annuity figures before choosing.
  • Wait for this year’s match and pay credit to post before moving the 401(k).
  • Leave both where they are until you have a plan. Never cash them out.

If the 401(k) holds JPMorgan shares, get the cost basis before any rollover; rolling them into an IRA gives up the net unrealized appreciation option.

4

The tax year

A fall last day stacks the lump sum on a full year of pay.

  • Estimate this year’s income with the severance and any RSU vests included.
  • Make an estimated payment if 22% withholding falls short of your bracket.
  • If next year starts with a gap, consider a Roth conversion then.

JPMorgan Chase may have filed in other states too; this page lists the notices confirmed on a state record. A notice states what was planned; final numbers can differ. Checked November 5, 2026.

Questions people ask

How many JPMorgan Chase employees are being laid off in New Jersey?

JPMorgan Chase filed six New Jersey WARN notices in 2026 covering 632 positions in Jersey City. The newest, posted in November, covers 91 positions with separations from October 30, 2026 through January 24, 2027.

Do I keep my unvested JPMorgan RSUs if I’m laid off?

Generally yes, if your job is eliminated. JPMorgan’s 2026 RSU terms let awards keep vesting on schedule when the firm ends your employment because your job was eliminated, you cooperated after notice and you sign the required release. Non-solicitation and clawback terms still apply. Your award terms control.

How much severance does JPMorgan Chase pay?

It’s set by the JPMorgan Chase U.S. Severance Pay Plan and stated in your separation letter. This guide couldn’t confirm the formula from an official copy, so use your letter. In New Jersey, state law requires at least one week of pay per year of service in a covered mass layoff.

When is JPMorgan severance paid?

JPMorgan’s 2026 As You Leave Guide says the lump sum is generally paid within two pay periods after your final pay, once you’ve signed and returned the Release Agreement. It’s taxed as wages, often withheld at a flat 22%.

Is COBRA subsidized after a JPMorgan layoff?

With a signed release, COBRA medical and dental cost the active-employee rate for the lesser of six months or the number of months of severance you receive, starting the first of the month after you leave. Vision and the spending account aren’t subsidized.

Does JPMorgan Chase still have a pension?

The JPMorgan Chase Retirement Plan stopped pay credits after December 31, 2019, but cash balance accounts still earn interest credits. After you leave, you can generally take a lump sum or an annuity, or leave it in the plan.

Will I get this year’s 401(k) match if I’m laid off?

Generally yes. The match and automatic pay credit are credited after year-end and normally require employment on December 31, but JPMorgan’s leaving guide counts a job elimination as an eligible termination. Confirm with HR for your case.
